Question of the Week #7

Sunday (November 30th) is the beginning of the Advent season. The Advent season will end on Christmas Eve at midnight. During the season of Advent, Christians across the world prepare for the celebration of the arrival of the baby Jesus into the world. Advent is a time to celebrate light in the middle of darkness. It is also a time to look forward to when Jesus will come a second time.

What does your family do to get ready for Christmas? For example, do you bake special cookies, cut down a tree, go caroling, etc.? Please share your family traditions with the class by writing it here on the blog.

We wake up and pray and some of our family come over. We say merry Christmas to each other and open our Christmas presents. Then in the afternoon we go to our cousins house.

To get ready for Christmas, we clean and decorate our house. We start decorating in the middle of November. We put up Christmas decorations like the "parol". A "parol" is a star shape or a flower shape hanging decoration made up of paper or painted tin. Some of them have blinking lights and others have still lights. Those made of paper have no lights. The "parol" hanging in our house has blinking lights and is shaped like a star and it's made out of tin. We also put up a Christmas tree and Holiday window clings. To celebrate Christmas, we send Christmas cards and presents to our relatives who live in the Philippines, Virginia and New Mexico. We also call them and greet them "Merry Christmas". The day before Christmas, we cook Filipino food like "pansit" (noodles)and "lumpia" (egg roll). Then we invite our relatives and friends in our house so we can have a simple party. We also give our presents to them. It is also very important in our family to go to church on Christmas Day!

We do a lot of things to prepare for Christmas. First, we see a play about the meaning of Christmas. Last, Saturday we saw "A Christmas Carol", a famous play written by Charles Dickens. It was wonderful.
We put wreaths on our front doors and small white lights on our Boxwoods and Pear trees. We decorate all our mantels, put up our Christmas stockings and, of course, buy a Christmas tree (we did that today) and decorate it. My Mom and Dad give Zach and me a special ornament that has something to do with a particular thing that we did or learned that year. We open them on Christmas Eve.
We bake cookies, pudding and cake that we share with friends and family. Almost every year we have a Christmas party to celebrate the joy of the anniversary of Jesus Christ's birth (if we're not away). We go to Mass on Christmas Eve and look at the beautiful Nativity scenes on display at church and in Unity Place.
Right before we go to bed, we get the cookies and carrots ready for Santa Claus and the reindeers. We also write Santa a letter. This is what I do preparing for Christmas.

My family and I decorate the Christmas tree with ornaments from Hawaii. And we make mangers and sometimes we make ginger bread houses with a Christmas scene. We make a Japanese snack called jello mochi. It is so good. Sometimes we travel to go see relatives from Arizona or Hawaii. That is what we do on Christmas. By Julia.

We star by seting up the Advent calendar. Then we put up our Advent candle wreath. Then we set up the Nativity scene and every day the wise men get closer. And finally we set up decorations slowly, not all at once, slowly.

The first thing my family does to get ready for Christmas is to get a tree. Next we decorate it and hang stockings. We go to the Santa Breakfast at a hotel in Seattle and go to church on Sundays and Christmas Eve. On Christmas Eve, we look at the Santa Tracker on the internet and bake cookies for Santa and leave carrots for the reindeer. Before we go to bed, we say our prayers. On Christmas morning, we open our stockings and wait for everyone to get up so we can open our presents. All my cousins come over to Mick Kelly's and we have dinner and play Wii Guitar Hero on the TVs.

To get ready for Christmas we go caroling and my mom makes peppermint bark.We get our Christmas tree about a week away from Christmas. Every weekend we watch Christmas movies on Family channel. On Christmas Eve we break the bread [also known as Oplatek]to celebrate friendship and hospitality. It is a Polish tradition. Also on Christmas Eve we each open one present. On Christmas Day we usually have a special breakfast or brunch.
